The number of prison sentences handed to knife offenders has reached a record low, with judges instructed to reduce incarcerations due to prison overcrowding. Ministry of Justice data for the quarter ending September 2023 reveals that only 26.2 per cent of offenders received immediate jail terms, down from a peak of 42.9 per cent in 2020 and marking the lowest figure on record.
