Police are investigating a fight that reportedly broke out during a performance of Hamilton at the Palace Theatre on Oxford Street. It’s the second time this year that things have turned rowdy at the Palace.
Hamilton, the global musical phenomenon, started its nationwide tour in Manchester earlier this month. At Friday night’s performance, there was an altercation between two audience members. Police were called to a report of an assault at 10:30pm, which would have been after the curtain had fallen.
Theatre in Manchester functions within a “fun night-out” culture with shows such as Dirty Dancing and The Bodyguard on regularly at The Palace Theatre. The producers are almost inviting the audience to singalong. It is hardly surprising then that sometimes things get out of hand. Hamilton demands more serious engagement than these popcorn musicals with famous songs, You could probably name them. Grease….9 to 5.
It is unlikely that incidents like this would occurr around the corner at The Royal Exchange Theatre which is likely to be showing performances of Shakespeare or Chekhov.
